Join us for a pleasant loop walk off Porcupine Ridge Road, in the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park, and enjoy the scenery of Red Stringy Barks, Red Box and Long-leaved Box with carpets of Matted Bush-Pea and emerging blossom of wattles, needlewoods and heath. For the history buffs, we’ll pass two huts of the bushranger – Sanger, and the hut of water-race entrepreneur James Hunt.
The meeting point at 9.30am is in Fryers St, Guilford, outside the Guilford Family Hotel, about 50 km from central Bendigo and 11 km from Castlemaine. You will need to register to find out exactly where we will start our walk. We are doing this because Google is “up the creek” with directions to the walk’s start point ie insisting on crossing a broken bridge at Vaughan.
From Guilford, it’s a 20 to 30-minute drive to the start of the walk, on mainly winding but well-maintained gravel roads. We can carpool from Guilford so the convoy will be shorter.
We will walk about 4.9 km and expect to finish the walk in 2 hours. The walk consists of mainly gently undulating tracks but there are a few badly eroded sections and some uneven ground. It includes one rough steep descent and climb, over a normally dry creek (the little bridge has been washed away). Please wear sturdy supportive footwear and suitable clothing, bring your walking poles, drinking water and snacks, and protect yourself from the elements. All going well we’ll be back at Guilford at 12.30pm.
