Australia is a global deforestation hotspot with more forest bulldozed here each year than for Indonesia’s entire palm oil sector. Behind most of this deforestation lies a bank. ANZ and NAB are among the biggest funders of companies driving deforestation in Australia. But together, we can change this!
ACF is partnering with ethical trading platform SIX to call on NAB and ANZ to adopt strong no-deforestation policies by filing Australia’s first-ever nature-related shareholder resolution for banks.
If you’re an ANZ or NAB shareholder, or want to purchase shares to be able to join the campaign, you can join this historic action by supporting the resolution. Join ACF and SIX for a lunchtime webinar to find out more about our shareholder resolution and how you can get involved!
What: Campaign Briefing - Using shareholder power to shine a light on deforestation
When: Wednesday 24 September 12.30pm - 1pm AEST
Where: Online via Zoom – RSVP for link
We know that even small groups of shareholders coming together can spark change. Shareholder resolutions are powerful tools to influence company decision-making. They place the issue as a formal item for discussion at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), puts an issue squarely on the board’s agenda and create an opportunity where corporate decision-makers must respond.
To file a shareholder resolution, we need one hundred shareholders in each company to join the resolution. We're just over halfway there, so if you're thinking you might want to be involved but don't know what it entails - this webinar is for you!
Banks have a powerful role to play in either helping or exacerbating Australia's extinction crisis. They can either facilitate nature destruction through their lending to certain activities and sectors, or help prevent it by setting strict conditions on lending to those that damage and destroy nature. We’ve already seen Westpac become the first Australian bank to set a no deforestation target for loans to beef, dairy and sheep farming, so we know the banks can be moved on this issue.
Hope to see you at the webinar!
