Cricketers for creatures — play a game, share a meal and help ensure we can play cricket for generations to come!

Summer is on its way and the unmistakable sound of leather on willow is returning to backyards, parks and ovals all around the country. The gentle applause for a boundary, exhilarated appeals for wickets and boisterous cheers for a ton or five wicket haul are intermittently accompanied by the laughs of a kookaburra, the calls of magpies and the occasional furry pitch invader.

Cricket is a game played outside, in nature, sometimes even by animals, whether it be the South Australian Redbacks, the Tasmanian Tigers or the Penrith Panthers. Cricket is our game, it’s nature’s game, and as soon as we cross the boundary and walk onto the field, from the backyard to the SCG, we are connecting with nature. With a kookaburra on our ball (and potentially our bats) and one or two in the trees, the summer of cricket is how we best connect with the Australian environment. This is worth protecting.

Nature needs us now, and by extension, cricket needs us too. As such, we are inviting the community of Western Sydney to join us in protecting the game we love. On Sunday 10 December, ACF is hosting a community backyard cricket match, where cricket lovers young and old, of all skill levels, can come together to play some backyard cricket and have the chance to advocate for the game’s future.

The match will be accompanied by a community BBQ, a couple of guest speakers, the chance to win some prizes and to get involved in an initiative to protect our cricket. A detailed rundown of the day will be provided closer to the date.

So grab a friend, bring your family, and get into your cricket whites. Have some fun, show off your cricketing skills and share a meal with the cricket community of Western Sydney so that we can protect our game for generations to come!
