Join us for a riveting cinematic journey through the stunning forests and unique wildlife of the south-west of Western Australia. Cry of the Forests takes viewers to the heart of the forests to witness first-hand the beauty of these towering ecosystems and the life they support. These ancient forests are among the most biodiverse regions on the planet and are recognised for their ability to capture and store carbon. Yet, instead of preserving them, they are being cut down at an alarming rate for charcoal, firewood and woodchips. As they diminish, the critical habitat they provide for endangered species is shrinking.

This is a free but ticketed event.  To register, please click here.

The film showcases the cultural, recreational and eco-tourism values of the south-west forests and their importance to small businesses including bee keeping. Underpinning the entire story is the climate crisis and the message that our forests have a special role to play in mitigating and slowing run-away climate change.

The viewer is introduced to the people risking everything in their efforts to protect the forests they love. We meet activists armed with go-pros and dressed in camouflage risking their lives to bear witness to the logging. We meet traditional custodians and the tourist operators and farmers on the frontline of the battle to protect the forests.

Film Duration: 54 MINUTES

AT THE END OF THE FILM, AN EXPERT PANEL DISCUSSION WILL BE HELD.

Produced and directed by independent East Fremantle-based filmmaker Jane Hammond in partnership with the WA Forest Alliance, Cry of the Forests was released on November 1, 2020 and has screened in more than 25 international film festivals and received three awards for Best Documentary. The documentary was filmed in South West WA with much of the vision shot in the Margaret River, Nannup, Pemberton, Manjimup, Bridgetown and Walpole areas.

The film was made on Bibbulmun Country with the financial support of Documentary Australia Foundation

Whilst this is a free event, donations on the day will be welcome. 100% of funds will go directly to the documentary-maker.
