Love of the Reef: A Demonstration for what we can't afford to lose

Tuesday 21 July 2026
08:00am - 09:00am
Federal Court of Australia
305 William St, Melbourne, VIC 3000, Australia

Labor approved a climate monster when it greenlit the extension of Woodside’s North West Shelf project late last year. So, we’re taking them to court.

The North West Shelf Extension could unleash climate pollution equivalent to almost ten times Australia’s annual emissions. If allowed to proceed, it would lock in decades of climate damage, threaten marine ecosystems, and undermine Australia’s climate commitments.

From the mighty Ningaloo to the Barrier Reef, Woodside’s massive climate bomb puts our future and Australia’s most precious natural places at risk.

And our legal team believes it is unlawful.

ACF’s court hearing to challenge the Federal Environment Minister’s decisions to approve the project and sweep its climate pollution under the rug kicks off in July, and we need our community to show up in force!

So grab your snorkel. Dust off your coral face paint. Zip up your wetsuit and join ACF's People Power crew on the first day of the hearing as we gather outside the Federal Court to demonstrate what Woodside’s Northwest Shelf project could destroy.

We’ve got the legal team. We’ve got the community behind us. And in an Australia-first, the United Nations Special Rapporteur has joined the fight. Now we need you to stand up and demonstrate that the only safe place for gas is in the ground.

Dress code

We need to demonstrate what we are at risk of losing if this extension goes ahead, so dress in your best "reef" gear! Think; snorkels, flippers, wetsuits, coral costumes, face paint, green turtles, pygmy blue whales, anything that says "reef". There will be some short speeches, good company, and a strong visual representation to show everyone what is at stake!
