In December 2025, the Australian Parliament passed changes to the country’s federal nature protection laws. As part of those reforms, promises were made to develop a set of National Environment Standards to be written at a later date. These are the rules that will make it clear what’s in and what’s out. The Standards must outline upfront how threatened plants, animals and ecosystems need to be protected under the national law.
The first of these standards has been released in draft form and it is clear that it does not deliver for nature.

Australians are demanding the Albanese Government set strong standards that ensure strong, consistent and enforceable decisions where the environment is prioritised, not politics. These standards are not yet in place. It’s not too late to see them strengthened. This is the biggest reform to nature laws in a generation. Parliament has to get it right.
