Winter is coming… and so are the whales!
Breaking news.... Kingsford Smith MP Matt Thistlethwaite and Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker are joining us at the count! Don't miss your chance to say hello to Matt and the Mayor and ask them to help us protect nature locally and at a national level.
As the air cools and we pull out our warm jackets, something magical begins off our coastline – the annual whale migration. Every winter, humpbacks and other species journey from the icy southern waters to warmer northern seas. And that means it’s time for one of our favourite seasonal traditions: whale watching!
This year, ACF Eastern Sydney is excited to take part in ORRCA’s (Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia) annual Whale Census – and we’d love you to join us!
🗓 Sunday June 29
🕗 ACF crew time: 8.30am–10am (but feel free to arrive earlier or stay later)
📍 Cape Banks, Kamay Botany Bay National Park
📍 Meet at: Westpac Rescue Helicopter Carpark at 8:30am
🚶♀️ We’ll then walk to the rock platform along the Cape Banks Walking Track
We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for all kinds of whales – especially the Southern Right Whale, a rare and endangered visitor to NSW waters. It’s a powerful reminder of why we fight for strong nature laws that truly protect our unique and wonderful wildlife.
What to bring:
• Warm clothes (layers are your friend!)
• A thermos and some snacks
• Binoculars and a camera, if you have them
• A friend – or come solo and meet new ones
• Your enthusiasm for protecting nature and spotting whales!
Whether you're a seasoned cetacean spotter or this is your first whale count, you're welcome. Come for the views, stay for the community, and leave with a deeper connection to our wild coast.
Let’s witness something wild – and stand together for the nature we love.
Hope to see you there,
🌊 The ACF Eastern Sydney Team
